Interview: Chief Minister of the United Church of Christ Congregation of the conversations about Gay marriage and same-sex blessings by Peter Menkin
Interview: Chief Minister of the United Church of Christ in the congregation of gay marriage interviews and blessings of same-sex
By Peter Menkin
Chief Minister, the Rev. Matt Broadbent, Los Altos, California, De the foothills of the Congregational Church, United Church of Christ, referred to the writer by telephone and webcam through Skype in February 2010 on marriage same-sex and same-sex blessings. This is the first of a series of interviews with clergy different name on the subject. Two others to come are interviews with The Rt Hon. Rev. Marc Andrus of the Episcopal Church, USA (San Francisco Bay Area known as the Diocese of California) and Rabbi Stephen Pearce of Temple Emanuel Reform, San Francisco. This writer hopes to find two people willing to speak their names, making a series of five.
1. This second part the question has to do with the mission of the Church: (1) Is the mission of the United Church of Christ and his congregation to proclaim and to standardize the practice Gay marriages and blessings of same sex? (2): a question of peace and justice, and comment on the remarks made by the Pilgrim Press editor, the Rev. Timothy G. Staveteig. I did a similar question if the file is the mission of the Church UCC and editors said in an email response:
a. "From the first edition of the Rev. Luther Martin King, Jr. 's Measure of a Man, in 1957, The Pilgrim Press has developed books and resources that have addressed often the Court for a difficult and complex social issues. With our publishing history operation (since 1640), which is a gift from the United Church of Christ, The Pilgrim Press Searched voices marginalized by a dominant culture and community building is fully inclusive. "I am responding as a pastor, not less as a scholar. No, not our mission. Mission is to be a Christian church and the incarnation of God to all peoples. It's all about peace and justice. Is more a matter of justice, and hope that those who are marginalized. My church is an upper middle class community in the heart of Silicon Valley. For most people, this is not a huge problem for them, a small group that opposes. We love to day the pilgrim Church, 1620. It was the movement of separatist Puritans trying to purify the church. These are mainly owners of the store and traders, some of the rising middle class in England, who wanted to leave the Church England. Bishop John Robinson, the Pilgrims Way sent to the New World with the warning: "The Lord further truth and light to break through the Holy Word of God. "The Presbyterian churches trying to be open to the LGBT community called" More Light "churches. This quotation collect Robinson. The UCC has attempted be faithful to this search for the continuation of the "light of God and the truth, and therefore we have had many" firsts "in American religious life. We one of the first religious groups opposed to slavery. We were the first to the first order and an order African American pastor, and the first for a woman in the 19th century. In the 20th century we the first order of an openly gay minister, the Rev. William Johnson in San Carlos, UCC ... We have a long tradition of pushing the edges of peace and social justice. I mean we are condemned for our principles, which continually asks: How God continually opens the Church to all people? It seems natural to say: "Should same sex marriages?
- Where are you in the United Church of Christ of the spectrum religious? Progressives, liberals, conservatives? What does this mean for you?
Minister of State, the Rev. Matt Broadbent: I think I'm somewhere in the range of progressive liberal, but my style is traditional. I laugh at my congregation, I'm more conservative than theirs. They try to be updated, while still singing plainchant. I like the tradition.
- Where is the San Francisco Bay United Church of Christ is the blessing of gay and lesbian marriages? A national statement has been made for this?
Minister of State, the Rev. Matt Broadbent: The simple answer is yes. We trained a national statement. This is not a hierarchical church, the national organization made a statement. This is a recommendation to the local churches. He goes to the local church. Each local church must decide how to manage the recommendation. On 4 July 2005, the General Synod 25 the National Assembly, which voted in favor of a right to marry recommendation Opportunities for All. Recommendation is my word and that's what means the possibility to support equal marriage rights for all.
- If a key biblical vision that supports gay marriage and same-sex blessings, please give a biblical example and explain something to his opinion on the interpretation? Who else shares this sensitivity and understanding that we can know or recognize?
Minister of State, the Rev. Matt Broadbent: My point is, if the question This is Jesus' response to gay marriages or relationships the same sex. Nothing. He did not mention at all. What happened in this discussion is people have collected some statements by Paul, and some of the Old Testament. Everyone have something to do with oppression, not the relationship. The passages of Scripture that guide me are: 1 John: 4, which says simply, God is love. And that love, God's love. 1 Corinthians 13 is the passing of Paul Love, holding the love relationship between people is the supreme value. For me, the essential text of the Gospel is the great commandment in Matthew, Mark and Luke. And it is the reaffirmation of Jewish tradition that we must love God and love neighbor. It is the heart of it is what Jesus says is the heart of faith. Marriage as such is a social agreement, or do not help to love God and love of neighbor. And tell people I'm in the business of fostering long term relationships. It is a healthy way in the world. If this is the same relationship, so that's what I do. I would say in these passages that our more conservative option, it's all about when a person benefits from someone else. When he talks about men who sleep with men or women with women, speaks of temple prostitution. It talks about relationships that are unequal and fundamentally unfair. What Jesus asks if justice and equality in the United Kingdom of God.
- What book do you recommend reading that takes readers to understand his position and his statements in support of Gay Marriage and Same-Sex Blessing?
So when people ask me, I turn to the web, www.UCC.org.
- Has conducted a blessing of same sex and, if yes, you tell us some of the words you use? Where do?
Minister of State, the Rev. Matt Broadbent: that I have, both in Santa Cruz, where he was for 17 years, and here in Los Altos, just a couple of months ago. I wished I could say I've done more. In Santa Cruz - he was with two women at the beginning of my ministry. They took me to the church in a frank and positive. We did the wedding in your home, not in the sanctuary. The reason what did this was one was an artist and the other was a professor at the University. I asked them to do when asked about marriage, "when?" The wedding took place in another in Los Altos Foothills Congregational Church UCC. The couple were legally married in Vermont. What we have done in the Church is a blessing from their civil rights votes, we have the same sex, without prejudice to the wedding ceremony. We worked with the couple and the ceremony was very traditional. They said: "We want to be married, not be in a show. "What we wanted to get an idea of God's blessing on their relationship chosen. We talked about one in Los Altos. They went with the blessing, because they were married.
- Who are the other major well known and respected clerics, leaders of churches of other denominations, primarily in the Bay San Francisco, and accompany you on your point of view? Do you know your faith? Is there someone with whom you spoke, that had the greatest influence?
Minister of State, Rev. Matt Broadbent: In our own denomination, is both the leaders of the United Church of Christ in the Bay Area. I know a couple of ministers who have problems with it. I really do not know anyone in our denomination that has a problem with gay marriage. There is always the Reverend Dr. Mary Susan Gast. It is conference minister in Northern California - Nevada region.
- If there are words you recommend implementing a same-sex blessings, I would say. Where in the Bible that support, and if you see these as part of the Social Gospel, please tell us something of his sense of social gospel that leads to support this? Do you recommend some readings from the Bible to homosexual couples (man and woman, man and woman), and their civil union or relationship, or marriage homosexual, are there other readings or meditations on the biblical text would you recommend?
Minister of State, the Rev. Matt Broadbent: In I've done both, we all had the Bible open to interpretation. Santa Cruz is clear we can not use one when a woman leaves her family and cling to her husband. However, the other couple, The Altossaid [on Paul's statement], we can make this work. One of us will be the role of the husband. The Bible was not a problem for them. They discussed the theme of love and commitment and caring for each other. We have considered the argument of the Apocrypha Toby's wife holding a goat. In most discussions I had with people, most of the material was open to the public passages regularly. There were great things to do special readings for people homosexuals. Everything is moving into the mainstream. Hey there, have the same needs, desires similar.
- At what point in your life, have begun to support the objective of this interview? It's been since a UCC ordained minister? Is there anyone in particular respect in which disagrees with your position?
Minister of State, the Rev. Matt Broadbent: My father was a minister, and he met my mother seminar. It was the United Church of Christ. We had always been part a liberal and progressive religion. There was a problem with gay marriage as a problem, but surpassed intellectually. My father grew up in an age that does not show much darling. It was something I missed. There was resentment on my part that I said that I loved. I think it is 50 years for the first time told me he loved me. I was afraid if he showed too much affection for me and his brother was afraid that we would become Gay. I never knew a time when we really had a problem with the question of marriage gay. It is a matter of being in covenant relationship. My problem is the same as in heterosexual relationships. When you become a sexual relationship only becomes in satisfying hunger, and not a relationship of care.
- Although we have not talked about Proposition 8 in California, how would you characterize the results of the vote said yes to deny gay marriage in the state? Is there some kind of fault in that position in the moral or spiritual?
I think people who oppose both Proposition 8 seem to imply that marriage is devalued by the same-sex marriage, my first reaction is uncertain how you. The point is that when a relationship based on reciprocity and trust and care for each other, This can only strengthen our society.
- When in faith and concern of the United Church of Christ (national and his congregation) did the tide toward the same sex Gay Marriage & Blessing? Could tell us something about your personal experience of faith and refers to the question of faith? Was this a teaching of Jesus Christ, a meditation on the Bible?
Minister of State, Rev. Matt Broadbent: It was a turbulent period in which the United Church of Christ decided to include the recommendation of marriage rights, are other conferences that have withdrawn from the United Church of Christ. Puerto Rico withdrew from the UCC In Pennsylvania (Western Pennsylvania) withdrew from the UCC (several associations no). I think there were associations of Indiana, which has the same thing. In our region. Chief Minister, the Rev. Matt Broadbent: My personal experience: When I cam to the Church Los Altos, 10 years ago, I was asked what will be one of its main challenges? I said: No, but you have to understand that I was a frank discussion Minister and positive, and that is how I would manage the Church. When the laity in the Church she even told me and everyone else, we must move forward and become a debate open and affirming church, I would be there to support them. There were people on this committee, we think is right. We can probably cope if block properly. During the ten years we have practiced, and during last three years have become an open and affirming church. We've lost some of its members, but we won a number of young families. All said they wanted to be part of a church that has been present, they wanted their children to be raised in this type of church. I was also asked, make a same-sex marriage. I said: Yes, I would. If I were asked. Before I made the request in Deacon (who are one the sovereign body of the Church are lay leaders Foothills Congregational Church UCC). I'm sure you would have said yes, but then became in an open and affirming church, we were able to do so. I went to one of the founding members of the Church fifties years, have you ever imagined we would have a same-sex marriage in the foothills. Never in my wildest dreams. Is this not perfect, "he said.
- Do you gave a sermon on the subject and the text can see a sample of the key?
State Minister, the Rev. Matt Broadbent: I do not usually exceed these things on the floor. I'm more of a Bible teacher, but I have used the issue as a reflection or illustration in a sermon. Several times people have used: This is why gay or lesbian or transgender are so annoyed by this problem. Instead of preaching hot social issues, I try to mix our concerns with the texts Bible. I try to create a form in which we can all talk to each other.
- What is your sense of community of believers, partly as a meeting and the senses as a dimension of leadership in a congregation? What is your sense of community beyond its name to the world's largest, and again Scripture gives us some instruction, perhaps the Old Testament concerning the matter again in the same Sex Marriage & Gay blessing?
- I think they have broached the subject, but to reformulate the question above, I believe it is important for our theme, and is not necessary to speak directly with the issue in its response or to the previous question, what the Church means to you as senior minister? What is your vision, as one might say?
Minister of State, the Rev. Matt Broadbent: What I think is the Church is the Body of Christ. We are called to embody the spirit of Christ in the world, and we realize that the life of Christ in us in the world. We are all one body, we're all included in the present. My vision of the Church is to understand my evangelical brethren, Catholics and Orthodox, the whole Church. What we are called to do is let us identified as an exclusive club in the world, but to show the Church as the Kingdom of God the world. It is a very broad view. How can I be inclusive? How can God in the world, not just the Church but in creation? A keyword word is to transform the UK. I believe His words, we will be confused, as if Jesus is all powerful and will judge us. It talks about how we are all united in this relationship to another, Jesus is opening an invitation to be near each other. It is so broad that it goes beyond religious identity. If God is love, God is absolute love.
- In my email correspondence with the Rev. D. Schuenemeyer Michael, we discussed a number of questions and topics on contemporary issues and gay marriage Same-sex blessings. I asked if San Francisco and California is leading the Church's missionary activity in this area, and if, as a secular society is in the foreground. Do you agree with your answer and comment on his remarks? He said, and asked:
-
- In what region is a leader in its answer to the question: "San Francisco?
-
- For the UCC, this effort is not unique to California and so it is difficult to say where the vanguard of this movement is in our name. There are churches, pastors and lay people involved in both civil and religious in many places around the country, particularly in states that have achieved equality in marriage, as Massachusetts, Connecticut, Vermont, New Hampshire and Iowa congregations tend to be most affected are those with an educational process called frank and positive. This process usually leads a local church to declare publicly their acceptance and inclusion of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people into full life and ministry of the Church.
-
- There was also a strong commitment to marriage equality has not yet achieved or on the ballot or in court, or against which the states have adopted laws on gay marriage. UCC leaders, clergy and laity, have assured the audience that religion is progressive and supports the organizing efforts that have success in building a movement that, despite recent setbacks ultimately, success.
-
- Power tends to be higher in areas where there is a high level of legislative elections, or legal activity. This fall, the Maine will be very active and there will be many UCC churches and leaders involved in the effort to defeat the ballot initiative to repeal of marriage equality there. There is much activity in Iowa in an effort to protect the court's decision. California also will remain a place of business with efforts to overturn Proposition 8, from 2010 or 2012
This is a personal response to the minister, the Rev. Matt Broadbent: He [the Rev. Michael] is citing statements you would not think to open the same-sex marriage. I grew up in New Hampshire. I came to California during the winter of 1979, I knew the California as everyone generally liberal in their social behavior. But the religious atmosphere was very conservative in nature, especially in the Valley and other areas. People were socially conservative in New Hampshire and in general have been religiously liberal. As a sort-General Environment. So I can understand why the New England states, acceptance of gay marriages. I know that his expectation was that it would act accordingly. In California, people do not always act appropriately, but religion close more. I think it's a strange paradox. No wonder that in California, which defeated the idea that same-sex marriage. Even if California is considered a sort of Left Bank life. It is one of the paradoxes of life. For me personally, I struggle and have struggled with the idea of separation of church and state. Especially in the churches of Anglo American. Not defined as Black churches that really get involved and take a position. They are socially liberal, but very conservative. What I am trying to do in the UCC is trying to preach the values stay to understand the fundamental values of the Gospel, then encourage the actions of people in the community. Personally, I try to run. For example, when it became an open and affirming church, everybody knew where I was.
- More Later, in my conversation E-mail to the Rev. Michael, I asked the following question with your answer. Want to comment on the service of blessing, said and tell us if you use it or know others in the area that uses it?
-
- Has standard service, or both, can I see the text?
- Yes It is a non-sexist version of the Order of marriage in our book of worship.

i. The Rev. Michael D. It Executive Schuenemeyer health and full awareness of the departments Chief Minister's largest church, the Rev. Matt Broadbent: This sound format is, in some so the operating model. And we are free to modify and adjust what we want. We really Bottoms Up Church ... independent thinking, and decisions are taken by the parishes themselves.
- Thanks for this interview through email questions and answers. Is there anything you'd like to add or say?
Minister of State, the Rev. Matt Broadbent: Not at this time. I think I'm in dissuaded.
Addition publisher Pilgrim (UCC) recommends these titles Gay Marriage books:
Same-sex marriage?: Extending marriage rights to couples of the same sex is a front-page news, and very controversial both in church and society. This review was written by a gay man and progressive Christian ethicist that the court decision puts the heart of contemporary spirituality. In dialogue with the lawyers and theologians, the author examines the strengths and weaknesses of how marriage traditionalists, advocates of same-sex marriage and LGBT (lesbian / bisexual / transgender gay) marriage critics examine issues and part of its arguments. This book offers constructive proposals for revitalizing Christian sexual ethics and advance the debate, whether the right to contract marriage is won or lost.
Exile or Embrace: This book is a useful guide for pastors and congregations questions such as:
How can we as a congregation to be in partnership with our members is gay?
How will we respond to homosexuals outside the church? The first part tells the story of the Congregation of the struggle and growth Siler while pondering the possibility of becoming an openly lesbian and gay Christians Welcome.
The second part helps church leaders to identify when and how to participate in this conversation in the assembly.
The third part is a study guide outlining the seven sessions to shape the conversation and discernment of the congregation.
God sale:
"The readers of this book will welcome not only for his wisdom and compassion, but also for suggesting the practices on how to start a conversation on the release of sex differences. Pastors especially thoroughly understand how to preach a gospel includes all can make our communities a more faithful application of God's reign. Hinnant and shows once again how preaching is above all a theological act, bearing witness to justice and compassion of God. "~ Thomas H. Troeger, Yale Divinity School and Institute of Sacred Music.
